How to be a Model – A Model’s Essential Kit

How “Preparation” Can Separate Amateur Models From Professional Models

There are two things that separate an amateur from a professional, and they are:

  • Experience
  • Preparation

If you’re not experienced in the modeling industry, then you need a little help to ensure you are prepared to become an experienced, professional model.

How You Can Ensure Success In The Modeling World

Models like to work with people that are ready to do their jobs (and if they can work with them on a regular basis, that’s even better). They don’t want to arrive on location to find nothing is ready – photographer hasn’t put up the set or the makeup artist forgot their makeup kit.

Professional photographers and makeup artists too want to work with models that are on time, professional and take direction well. Models who are easily accessible and can quickly make it to the photo shoot will make a positive impression.

Models that have the right work ethics and a good attitude are far more desirable than just pretty faces. This will lead to a better portfolio that can be used for future employment. And, people in the industry are much more likely to work with these models for their jobs.

Remember: a happy client makes for the best client.

Difference between a successful model and not so successful models is just one factor. That is repeat clients. Its not just your looks, but the personality and warmth brings in repeat clients.

If you’re always prepared for a job, you’ll see a high percentage of repeat clients. What can you do to ensure you have a repeat clientele base?

What Are Some Positive Attributes Models Need To Have

  • You must be easy to get hold of at all times. This isn’t all that difficult today with cell phones act as everything from phone, internet device, GPS, organizers etc. Make sure your cell phone is left on day and night, because you never know when you’re going to get a phone call.
  • Use the phone’s navigation app. If you don’t already have one on your phone, be sure you download one and install it. With a navigation app, you’re sure to reach your desired location on time, every time… even if you’re in a strange location.
  • Be on time always. And, if you expect you’ll be late, let the people at the location know what’s going on ahead of time and be apologetic on the phone.
  • When you get to the location, be pleasant and polite. You want people to like you as this will take you much further in your career.
  • When you’re not woking on the set, find something to do. Consider bringing a book to read or playing a game on your iPad or iPhone.
  • Be sure all your modeling items are on standby – packed up and ready to go – just in case you need to quickly leave for a photo shoot.

What Items Should Already Be Packed and Ready To Go

There are so many things you need to have on hand – packed up – to ensure that you’re ready to leave on any given notice. You certainly don’t want to go hunting for these items when you need to be on set within a certain time frame. These items can include:

  • Book/portfolio
  • Comp cards
  • Phone
  • Navigation
  • Note Pad
  • Pencil

Beauty Products:

  • Mirror
  • Fragrance
  • Brush and Paste
  • Hairbrush
  • Make up Kit
  • Soap

  • Different color underwears
  • Extra Bra
  • Stockings
  • Tights
  • Heels and flats
Sometimes, it’s best to be over-prepared to ensure that you are ready for when you are called. By being prepared, you don’t make people wait for you, twiddling their thumbs and wondering if they are losing precious time and daylight waiting for you to show up.
